How email aliases work

  • Google Workspace users can have additional email addresses, called email aliases
  • With email aliases, people can receive emails to multiple email addresses in a single Gmail mailbox
  • Adding an alias email address enables email delivery to a user’s mailbox. Still, it doesn’t allow the user to send emails from that email address. To enable sending emails from an alias email address, follow these steps.

Adding free email addresses to Google Workspace

  • Email aliases are free, so the cost of your Google Workspace account doesn’t increase, no matter how many you add.

When to add an email alias instead of creating a new user

  • You should add an email alias when someone already has an existing user account and needs an extra email address for it.

Follow the steps below to add or remove aliases.

Step 1

To create a new user account, go to the Admin console https://admin.google.com and under Users, click Create an alternate email address (email alias).

Type the name or current primary email address of a user to add an extra email to them. Click it when it comes up suggested below.

Once it’s selected, click PROCEED.

Type the email address you want to add as an email alias in the Alternate email field.

If you have added Secondary domains, you can click the Domain part of the email address to select another domain.

Click SAVE when you are done adding email aliases.

To remove an email alias, click the X to the right of it.

Done, the aliases you saved will appear in the Alternate email addresses (email alias) section.
