How to Handle Insecure Content for Google Workspace Users in Google Chrome

Quick and easy-to-follow guide for Google Workspace administrators

As a Google Workspace admin, you can configure how Google Chrome works with mixed and potentially insecure content.

Mixed content is when a page loads through a secure https:// connection, but additional resources load through an insecure connection http://.

This setting applies to Google Workspace users signed in to Google Chrome or anyone using a managed browser.

How to allow or block insecure content on specific websites in Chrome step-by-step with images

Step 1

In Google Admin at https://admin.google.com, click Devices > Chrome > Settings >  Users & browsers in the menu on the left.

Step 2

Select the OU with the users whose settings you want to update on the left. The same updates will apply to all sub-OUs under the OU you choose.

By default, if you don’t select an OU, you will add your setting to the top OU, named after your domain. This way, you will apply changes to all users in your account.

You can search for an OU to find it faster if you have a large OU structure.

If you’re not familiar with OUs, click here.

Next, click + Search or add a filter and type the name of one of the settings in the following image to locate it.

  • Strict treatment for mixed content
  • Control use of insecure content exceptions
  • Allow insecure content on these sites
  • Block insecure content on these sites

Step 3

Next to Strict treatment for mixed content, choose the Use strict treatment for mixed content option to automatically upgrade all http content to https. If this is not possible, Chrome won’t load insecure resources, and it will show a warning in the URL bar.

Next to Control use of insecure content exceptions, choose between:

  • Allow users to add exceptions to allow blockable mixed content
  • Do not allow any site to load blockable mixed content.

Allow insecure content on these sites lets you add URL patterns to allow – each one on a single line.

Block insecure content on these sites lets you add URL patterns to block – each one on a single line.
