How to Route Emails You Send From Another Email Service Through Google Workspace (SMTP Relay)

Quick and easy-to-follow guide for Google Workspace administrators

What is an SMTP relay

  • An SMTP relay service lets senders deliver bulk email by routing through a trusted third party.

When to set up the SMTP relay setting

  • This setting is applicable if you or other users are sending emails from a non-Google mail service.
  • In this case, you have the option of routing emails sent from that service through Google on the way out before they reach the original recipient.
  • This way, you can apply your Google Workspace settings to the messages.

Steps to take before you set up an SMTP relay

To set up SMTP relay, have your non-Gmail service connect to:

  • Server name: smtp-relay.gmail.com
  • Port: 25, 465, or 587
  • SSL or TLS is required, as well as one or more static IP addresses for authentication.

Next, add your network IP to the SMTP relay service in the Admin console:

By default, if you don’t select an OU, you will add your setting to the top OU, named after your domain. This way, you will apply changes to all users in your account. This is generally recommended in this case.
