How to Set up an Outbound Mail Gateway in Google Workspace

Quick and easy-to-follow guide for Google Workspace administrators

What is an outbound mail gateway

  • An outbound mail gateway is an email server that your outgoing messages pass through before delivering to the final recipient.

When to set up the Outbound gateway setting

  • Suppose all emails sent from Google Workspace need to go through another server before being delivered to the intended recipients.
  • In that case, you need to add that server to the Outbound Gateway setting.

How the Outbound gateway works

  • When you send emails, Google routes them through the outbound gateway server on the way out before delivering.

Under Organizational Units, select the OU with the users whose settings you want to update. The same updates will apply to all sub-OUs under the OU you choose.

By default, if you don’t select an OU, you will add your setting to the top OU, named after your domain. This way, you will apply changes to all users in your account. This is generally recommended in this case.

Update your domain’s SPF record

  • In addition, if you have an SPF record added to your domain settings, you must add your outbound mail gateway server to your SPF record.
  • Your SPF record must include the Google Workspace mail servers and the outbound mail gateway server.
  • Your DKIM will work if the gateway forwards your messages without modifying them.
  • If your gateway server changes emails in any way, DKIM won’t work. Make sure the gateway server doesn’t modify emails.
